How Often Should You Clean Your Bathroom?

bathroom

The ideal frequency of cleaning your bathroom depends on two things; how often it is used and the bathroom size. Generally speaking, if the toilet is used frequently, it should be cleaned at least once a week to remove dirt, grime, and germs. However, if your bathroom is only used occasionally, cleaning can spread out to every two to three weeks.

Despite regular bathroom cleaning, it’s also important to deep clean once every three to four months. Bathroom and toilet deep cleaning should involve scrubbing the walls, floors, and surfaces with a disinfectant cleaner and using tools such as a steam cleaner to remove dirt and grime from hard-to-reach areas.

Combining regular weekly bathroom cleaning with quarterly deep cleaning will help keep your bathroom looking and smelling fresh.

How to Clean Your Bathroom Effectively

Prepare the Space & Apply Cleaners

Start by decluttering and removing all towels, bathmats, trash, and personal items. This ensures you have a clear surface to work on.

  • Open a window or turn on the exhaust fan for ventilation.
  • Put on gloves to protect your hands and maintain hygiene.
  • Spray toilet bowl cleaner inside the bowl.
  • Apply bathroom-safe cleaner to your sink & faucet, shower walls & tub, and countertops
  • Let products dwell for 5–10 minutes. Dwell time breaks down soap scum, bacteria, and mineral buildup and also reduces scrubbing effort.

Clean the Toilet (Top to Bottom)

There’s a correct way to clean your bathroom and that’s from the top to bottom. If washing your toilet, scrub inside the bowl with a toilet brush, flush to rinse the brush, and wipe all surfaces, including the flush handle, tank, top and underside of the toilet seat, and the base/floor area behind the toilet

Pro Tip: Always clean the toilet first to avoid cross-contamination.

Clean the Shower & Tub

For the shower and tub, start by scrub the walls, grout lines, fixtures, and tub surface. Be sure to pay special attention to corners and drains. Rinse everything thoroughly with warm water and dry all wet fixtures with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

Clean Sink, Countertops, Mirrors & Glass

Your sinks and countertops also deserve cleaning, especially as the surfaces often harbour germs and dirt. Start by scrubbing sink basin, drain, and faucet then wipe countertops, backsplash, and soap dispensers.

If you have a polishing product, apply to faucet with a dry microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.

For your glass and mirrors, spray your cleaner lightly and directly or use a damp microfiber cloth. Let the cleaning product sit for 2-3 minutes before wiping in an “S” pattern to avoid streaks. Do a final round of wiping with a dry, clean cloth to give it the desired final look.

Floors & Details

With everything else handled, proceed to sweep or vacuum the floor, mop using a bathroom-safe cleaner, and wipe everything else from light switches to door and cabinet handles

The Consequences of Not Cleaning Your Bathroom Frequently Enough

The consequences of not cleaning your bathroom frequently enough can be serious. Not only can it lead to an unpleasant smell, but it can also create an ideal environment for mould, mildew, and bacteria to grow. These can cause various health problems, such as allergies, infections, and respiratory illnesses. In addition, if left uncleaned for long enough, your bathroom fixtures can become stained, corroded, and discoloured, making it difficult to keep your bathroom looking clean and presentable.

Finally, not cleaning your bathroom often enough can also lead to damage to your plumbing. This can be caused by the buildup of soap scum, hair, and other debris that clog the pipes and drains. This can lead to costly repairs and replacement of fixtures and plumbing, as well as increased water bills.
